Can I deposit money at a non-BMO ATM?

No, you can only deposit money to your BMO accounts at a BMO ATM.

I deposited a cheque but there’s a hold on it. Why?

When you make a deposit at an ATM or branch, that money can be held up to eight business days (not including the day of the transaction) depending on the amount and how you made the deposit. And if a foreign currency cheque has been deposited, the funds may be held up to 30 business days.

How do I get access to the full amount of the cheque when I make a deposit?

When you deposit a cheque at an ATM or branch, $100 of the cheque amount may be available to you immediately. The rest of the funds will be available after the hold has expired, usually between four to eight business days. The hold period is determined by a variety of factors. After you deposit your cheque, you can go online to see how much of the funds are available to you.

What should I do with the cheque after I’ve deposited it?

Write the date and 'Deposited' on the front of the cheque. Keep it for 14 days to ensure it clears, then destroy the cheque promptly after the 14-day period and no later than 120 calendar days after the deposit date.

Is there a fee for depositing cheques through the mobile app?

There is no charge to deposit cheques into your personal deposit account. Per-item deposit content fees may apply when you deposit items into a business banking account.

Log into the BMO Mobile Banking App

Tap Pay & Transfer and then deposit a cheque. Then select i agree before entering your cheque details.

Enter your cheque details

Enter the amount on the cheque, the account it will go into and take a photo of the front and the back of the cheque.

Select deposit and you’re set to go!

Or download the Government of Canada direct deposit form for Government of Canada payments. Then, complete the form.

Enter your details

Either attach a void cheque or include your account, financial institution and branch transit numbers. You can find these numbers on one of your cheques or in Online Banking under Accounts in the Overview section of your respective account.

Send the form to the payer

Once you’ve completed the form, send it to the payer and you’ll be set to go!

Insert your debit card, enter your PIN and select Deposit

Select the account and insert your cheque(s) and/or cash together, you no longer need an envelope to make a deposit.

Confirm your deposit

The ATM will provide a summary of your cheques and cash. Check to make sure everything is counted correctly.

Correct any errors

If you notice an error, you can correct the cheque amount on the edit screen. Once complete you can select a receipt option and exit or continue banking.

1. Sign in to your BMO Mobile Banking App.
2. From the Pay & Transfer ($) menu or the More menu, select Deposit a Cheque.
3. Enter the amount of the cheque.
4. Select the account you want to deposit the cheque to.
5. Take a picture of the front and the back of the cheque.
6. Confirm deposit details.
Remember to endorse your cheque by signing your name and writing your full account number after quote, for deposit only, account number on the back of the cheque.
